Why classical organ?
First things first. I am not a professional musician or composer — just an interested amateur who loves the classical organ. I hope my offerings will be enjoyed but have no delusions of glory.
For those who have never heard even the smallest pipe organ, much less a Cavaillé-Coll, your first experience will be revelatory.
Nothing matches the incredible dynamic range of a great organ, from an almost inaudible flute to the roar of a 32 foot contre bombarde. That is why the pieces on this web site need to be heard on the best reproduction system you can find. Anything less will not do justice to the instrument.
Perhaps after listening, you will want to find recordings of the masters, both performers and composers, now readily available on the internet. Everyone starts with J.S. Bach and works down from there: Franck, Widor, Dupre, Vierne, Durufle, to list just a few.
This website accepts files of limited size, which somewhat compresses the dynamic range and increases the noise, but the sound quality is still acceptable.
A Union Pacific freight approaching Dragoon, Arizona, at dusk. The image reminds me of the Prelude to Durufle’s Suite, Opus 5.
